I'M A PATRIOT
In a recent series of tweets, ANC Secretary Fikile Mbalula laid out the party's purported commitment to addressing various crises facing South Africa. However, a closer look at the ground realities reveals a stark contrast, showcasing a narrative that is riddled with lies, deceit, and empty promises.
HOUSING CRISIS:
Contrary to Mbalula's optimistic tweet about providing decent housing, thousands of South Africans remain trapped in a perpetual waiting list limbo. Backyard dwellers languish, surviving on a paltry R450 a month. Mbalula's promise of a "better life for all" falls flat as many struggle to afford even basic rents, let alone dream of owning a place of their own.
WATER CRISIS:
While Mbalula boasts about clean and drinkable water, the 2023 Blue and No Drop report exposes a different truth. One out of many struggling provinces Northern Cape's drinking water systems are in poor condition, with a staggering 87% in critical performance. Wastewater treatment works face a 64% risk of discharging untreated water. Mbalula's claims of an excellent water system clashes with the grim reality of municipalities grappling with limited access to clean water.
ELECTRICITY CRISIS:
Mbalula's promise of reliable electricity is overshadowed by the stark reality of power cuts plaguing the nation. The most developed economy in Africa is now sinking into darkness, with businesses forced to shut down, household appliances damaged because of power surges, and everyday life disrupted by load shedding.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT CRISIS:
Contrary to the commitment to safe and reliable public transport, South Africa's trains are facing a crisis. Widespread theft, station pillaging, stolen cables, and vandalized facilities have caused train services to operate at less than a third of normal capacity in the Gauteng province alone.
LITERACY CRISIS:
Mbalula's promise of quality education clashes with the literacy crisis revealed by the Progress in International Reading Literacy study. Eight out of 10 South African school children struggle to read well by the age of 10, ranking the country as the worst among 57 nations.
SAFETY AND SECURITY CRISIS
Mbalula's assurance of safety and security is shattered by an increased crime rate like the kidnapping crisis, with over 1000 reported cases each month. Kidnapping videos circulate, instilling fear, and the situation appears to be spiraling out of control, signaling a state of emergency regarding crime.
HEALTH CRISIS:
Despite Mbalula's mention of quality healthcare, the South African Medical Association reports over 200 community service doctors facing unemployment in 2023. In Kwazulu Natal alone, 400 doctors are unemployed due to budget constraints.
UNEMPLOYMENT CRISIS:
Mbalula's commitment to employment is overshadowed by record unemployment at nearly 33 percent, with the United Nations warning of a potential political stability time bomb. According to the World Bank, graduates resort to menial jobs and recycling to make ends meet, making South Africa the world's highest unemployment rate.
In the face of these harsh realities, Mbalula's tweets seem more like a smokescreen than a genuine commitment to addressing the crises plaguing South Africa. The people deserve more than empty promises and deceptive narratives.
